Dozens of executed OSS agents pollute the warehouse floor. I make sure Gloria stays behind the crates that shield her view. All records of what the OSS is doing here, along with any evidence of the Sarin capsule and the glass button, are gone. How am I going to expect anyone to believe a word I say? The Germans are right; who am I going to tell?
The one thing I do realize is that Gloria and I are going to have to leave this place. Gloria emerges from her hiding place. She turns in a circle, studying the carnage that remains. Her face is emotionless and firm. Maybe she is maturing to this type of life.
âYou shouldnât be out here in the middle of all this.â
âWhere am I going to go Wil? Tell me, where am I going to go?â
âWeâre alone in all this shit again. Colonel Higgins believed what we were telling him. He had seen the evidence himself and his doctor verified it. Now all trace of what we had been saying is gone and so are these men.â
I walk over to hug her. âIâll think of something.â
âYouâll think of something? How are you going to do that? As soon as we walk out of here, we run the risk of being thrown in jail for the rest of our lives. Willâ¦â She begins pounding her fists on my chest as she screams. Sheâs right. How am I going to be able to protect her when I canât protect myself?
For the first time, the realization of our circumstances becomes clear to me. It isnât only me, but Gloria is involved in this just as deeply as I am. If only we could send a message to someone, anyone. I remember something Colonel Higgins said before Gloria and I went to the canteen. He gave an order for our current status to be radioed to Area C. Thereâs a communication system somewhere in this warehouse.
âWeâre going to search for the radio room that the OSS team here is using to communicate to their headquarters.â She looks at me with confusion.
âWhat radio room, Wil?â
âRemember, Higgins wanted everything we were discussing regarding the Sarin capsule and the glass button reported back to Area C. Iâm guessing this is their communication branch.â Sheâs still not following my line of reasoning.
âAs long as the Germans didnât destroy the radio system here, we might be able to get word back to this body of the OSS and have them send support here.â
âItâs worth a try. But I donât want us to split up. Can we stay together?â she asks.
âYes we can. Stay with me. If I remember, the captain was heading this way after the colonel had given him the order. And we walked this way toward the canteen.â
We walk through the warehouse until we come to a series of permanent walls. They at one time must have made up some sort of office area. The area has few lights. I open each door one by one until I come to the last office.
